Can we borrow a dictionary?

Answer

Yes.  The library has an extensive collection of dictionaries.  Newer dictionaries are located in the reference room and others are in the general collection.  Those that are in the general collection CAN be borrowed.  The ones in the Reference room are to be consulted on-site.

That said, there are a number of dictionaries (many English-French dictionaries) on Reserve at the services desk for short-term loan (to bring to exams).  If you would like one of these, ask at the main LLC services desk.

To find what we might have:

  • When searching in Sofia's Advanced Search https://ubishops.on.worldcat.org/advancedsearch, simply type in: "English language dictionaries", and in the search index drop-down menu, limit to Subject.  click Search.
  • Next, you will see a list of results.  If you are seeking a print book, in the left-hand column, scroll down to format and select print books.  Browse to choose the one that interests you the most.  there you will see a call number and additional info to help you find it on the shelves.  NOTE: the location to know if it is general collection  or reference
  • If you are seeking a dictionary in a language other than English, simply substitute the word English for the language you are seeking.  NOTE: be sure to write it in English e.g.:  "French Language dictionaries".    Not: "Français language dictionaries".
